The Illusion
To celebrate the first night of summer vacation, my friends, my family and I gathered for a picnic at the Starlight City park. It had been a long but interesting year. We had met and defeated slimes from another dimension, a very powerful future version of me, aliens from another world, and a strange assortment of various robots and drones. Plus, no conversation about my life would be complete without the occasional wannabe supervillain popping in and out to challenge me. Oh, and there were still the average everyday villains who were silly enough to attempt crimes in the cities that my friends and I patrolled. But we’d usually make quick work of them.
With such an unusual year behind us, it felt good to get together as normal friends and family to eat hot dogs, hamburgers, veggie burgers, and the assorted fixings. A bunch of us may have had superpowers, but we were all just average kids, whatever the heck that might mean. I guess it meant we all put our pants on one leg at a time. We all had hopes and dreams and fears. Yes, even when you are mostly invulnerable like I am, you still fear things. It’s weird; sometimes I think I worry about more stuff now that I’m super than I did before my powers appeared. I want to do so much but even I have my limits. Plus, if history has taught me anything, it’s that there’s always going to be a challenge to overcome. Once again, I guess that’s what makes life fun.
My BFF, Jason looked over at me as I stared off into space. “You know that hamburger is not going to eat itself,” Jason joked.
Smiling at him, I said, “Just thinking about the year we’ve had. We’ve done a lot! So much has changed.”
For the better though,” Jason said.
“Agreed,” I said.
As I munched on my burger, I thought about the events that had taken place. During that time, I had developed more control of my powers. I learned to understand that a whiff of my feet on a hot day could knock out a squad of attacking ninjas; which was a good thing when being attacked by ninjas. Although it was not such a good thing when shoe shopping at the mall, But I now knew to control my super stinky feet. While my powers grew by the day, I now had so much more control over them.
Additionally, the tech guys at my dad’s lab had made Jason a cool power suit that he could wear to help him battle crime. It’s always nice to have your BFF by your side when you’re battling baddies. Dad and his team were consistently improving Jason’s armor, and the more Jason used the armor, the more comfortable he became with it.
I also had the sparks of a relationship starting with my “friend” Adam. Because Adam was cloned by a tip-top secret organization to make him super, we both felt a little different from non-super people and were slowly forming a bond; a bond that I’m not sure Jason totally appreciated. But in the future, Adam and I could be more than friends. Of course, I sometimes thought that about Jason as well. I guess it wasn’t a bad dilemma to have two great guys as friends, who you could be interested in as more than friends.
However, Adam pretty much always had his BFF, Zeke tagging along with him. Zeke was a little…how can I say this politely…different. Zeke had to be over two hundred years old, but he had the body and mind of a thirteen-year-old since he happened to be a zombie. His social skills were just a little lacking. He tended to fall in love (or in crush) pretty easily. As well as all that though, he had to be the most loyal “person” I knew.
To top things off…on the good news, the interesting news front…my dad was back in my life. He ran the huge tech company BMS Labs. I felt great having Dad around again, even if he did like to experiment with me and test my limits! Of course Dad’s new girlfriend, Hana was literally new. I believe he created her like two years ago. Yes, my dad’s girlfriend was an android. But really, when you are a superhero, you learn to expect the unexpected and accept the strange.
I looked up from the burger on my plate and saw Marie and Lori heading towards me. “You going to miss us when we’re are at LAX camp?” Lori asked.
“Of course,” I replied.
Marie whispered to me. “Australia is only a few thousand miles away; you could always fly there quick for a visit.”
“Or if you need us to help you fight a super emergency while we’re away, let us know!” Lori said, quietly.
We didn't need our normal friends hearing about me flying to Australia or fighting emergencies, so I was glad Marie and Lori were keeping their voices at a whisper.
“I might pop down for a visit,” I said. “But I’m sure Jason and I will handle anything the universe sends us for the month or so while you’re gone.”
“Are you going to miss Adam?” Marie asked with a smile.
I nodded. “Of course, but he’s going into outer space to work on a space station for a summer job. And he’s doing it for science so it’s important that he goes.”
Lori nudged me and whispered even more quietly, “I bet Jason is happy he won’t have to compete with Adam for a while.”
“Jason and I are just friends,” I insisted. Though deep down I knew (or thought I knew) Lori was right.
“BTW, where is Adam?” Marie asked, grinning.
“He and his sister, Ellie Mae should be teleporting here at any moment. They have some final prep work to complete before their trip to the Future Now space lab.”
“Hey, maybe Ellie Mae can teleport from space to Earth?” Lori offered.
Jason spoke up. “Nah, the conditions in outer space prevent Ellie Mae from porting. For some reason, her teleporting ability is tied to the amount of natural oxygen in the area.”
“How interesting,” Lori said. From her tone, you could tell she didn’t mean it.
Jason picked up on Lori’s tone. “Look, I’m not jealous of Adam. And even if I were, which I am NOT, I have no control over Ellie Mae’s powers or their limitations.”
Lori nudged him softly, “Just teasing you, bro.”
I felt Jason mostly meant what he said. After all, we had been best friends for as long as we’d known each other. I didn’t think either of us was in a hurry to change that. Still, I felt he had to be at least a little jealous of Adam. But then again, Jason had already been in a relationship with Tanya.
Just as I thought of Tanya, she walked over to me. At the same time, I noticed a small grin appear on Jason’s face.
“Thanks for having the veggie burgers here,” Tanya said, pointing to one of the burgers on the table.
“No problems,” I told her. “How do you like being vegan?” I asked.
Tanya shrugged. “It’s okay. Doctor Donna Dangerfield is hoping it might help Kayla and I get an even better handle on our powers.”

Your powers are pretty awesome,” Jason chirped. “But yeah, it would be nice if Kayla had more control.”
Tanya nodded. “I’m hoping that us spending the summer at the North Pole with Doctor Donna will be beneficial.”
“I’m sure it will be,” I said, putting my hand on her shoulder.
“If you need us, just contact me. I’ll stop time and be here before you know it,” Tanya said.
Tanya just had to mention how awesome her time control powers were. I couldn’t blame her. If I had power over time and space, I’d mention it a lot too.
Kristi and Tim, two of my non-superhero friends, started walking over to our picnic table. I breathed a little sigh of relief. Having non-superhero friends helps to keep me and my friends grounded in the real world. The world I strive to protect as a superhero.
“Great party!” Kristi said as she hugged me.
“Agreed,” Tim said. “I especially love the burgers. I just can’t get enough burgers; especially ones with eggs and cheese,” he grinned, as he reached for the last remaining egg burger on the table.
Kristi looked around the park. “Is Adam here yet?” she asked, her eyebrows raised curiously.
“Not yet, he’s coming after he finishes work,” I said.
“Oh, what does he do?” Kristi asked.
“He works for a lab in his town,” I said.
“Oh cool. He’s smart and cute!” Kristi said.
“Well, he mostly does cleaning duties at the lab,” Jason said.
In a way, Jason was right. Part of Adam’s job was to clean up messes from experiments that had gone haywire. Yet, Jason made it sound like Adam was working as a janitor. I shot Jason a look.
He backed down a little. “Of course, Adam is a bright guy. I believe he also observes some of the cooler experiments,” Jason added.
“Man, the guy is good looking and smart,” Tim said. “That’s almost unfair.”
“Plus, he has big muscles,” Kristi said. She covered her mouth. “Oops, I didn’t mean to say that out loud.” She paused for a moment and stared off into space. “He also reminds me of that kid, Brandon, before he transferred out of our school.” She sighed. “I miss him…”
“Actually, Adam and Brandon are nothing alike,” I said uneasily.
“Yeah, Brandon was much taller,” Jason said, helping me turn attention from the fact that the student we knew as Brandon really was Adam. Yes, the boy I am interested in is a super-powered clone who used to pretend to be a normal boy as he learned more and more about being normal.
“Plus, I am pretty sure Brandon was better looking,” Lori added, stepping in to help turn the conversation.
“Oh, I don’t think either one of them is THAT good looking,” Jason noted.
Kristi laughed.
“Dude, you might need your eyes checked,” Lori said.
I sighed on the inside. I wished that something would happen to change the course of this conversation. Where was a super emergency when I needed one?
“Oh my gosh! What are those?” Kristi asked, pointing up to the sky.
Looking up, we saw a flock of something flying above us in a V formation.
“Geese?” Tim offered.
Kristi shook her head. “No, no, those are NOT geese.”
I used my super-vision and saw dozens of winged flying monkeys with robotic eyes and arms right above us.
Jason pulled out a pair of binoculars and looked up. “That is crazy!” he said. “It looks to me like those monkeys have missiles on their wings.”
“Of course they do,” I sighed.
“Who thinks of these things?” Kristi asked.
Dad rushed over to us, waving his arms. Hana followed. Dad stopped and huffed away. He tried to talk but instead, he panted.
“Honey, you need to get in better shape,” Hana lectured. “What my dear fiancé was trying to say is that those flying monkeys are armed and heading towards our beloved BMS Labs. We are sure this is nothing that security can’t handle.”
“Really?” I asked.
“Our security people are prepared for many various scenarios,” Hana said. “Still, we’ve called in flying shuttles to return all people to their homes. We suggest you stay in your houses and lock your doors.”
We saw two flying shuttles coming in for a landing.
“Lia, Jason, Tanya, Lori, and Marie, you will get in shuttle 1313,” Hana said. “The rest of you will get in shuttle 007007,” Hana declared.
Hana had such an authoritative way about her that everybody did as she told them to. It actually was a great way to separate the super powered from the non-super powered, making it much easier for us to go help out Dad’s security people.
Once we took off in our own shuttle, I activated my super teen outfit while Jason pulled on his armor suit. “Jason and I will clear out the landing area!” I told Marie, Lori, and Tanya.
Hana moved forward. “I will fly down with you. I have activated my foot jets.”
“Just save some of those crazy flying monkeys for us,” Tanya said.
Jason and I flew out of the shuttle and raced towards the flying monkeys.
“MAC, how close are those monkeys to the labs?” I asked.
“The lab will be in their range in 30 seconds,” MAC answered.
Using my super teen vision, I noticed that all the flying monkey cyborgs had metallic helmets around their foreheads. That meant one thing…they were being controlled.
“Okay, team,” I broadcast to them via MAC. “These monkeys are being mind-controlled. That means we have to take it easy on them!”
“Pretty sure they won’t see things the same way,” Lori said.
“Yep, but that’s why we are the good guys!” I declared.
“Uh oh!” MAC said. Never a good sign when your computer aid says ‘uh oh’. “I detect missile launch!”
Without hesitating, I zoomed towards the missiles, figuring I could use my heat vision to stop them. The problem was, I was only one person and there were more than twenty-four missiles in flight.
“Wow, that’s a lot of missiles!” I told Jason. “How many can you take out?”
Jason extended his right arm and said, “I can use my homing missiles to knock out five of those ones.”
“I think if I use a wide range heat vision blast, I can take out maybe ten…” I said.
“That still leaves a lot…” Jason sighed.
“I’ll get the others!” the very familiar voice of Adam bellowed from above.
Turning, I saw Adam in his super clone costume zooming towards us.
“Sorry I’m late for the party!” Adam said.
“Actually, your timing is perfect!” I told him.
Zeke waved from behind Adam. “I’m here too!” he called. “Of course my jetpack and I can’t stop a missile but we can send positive vibes!”
“We’ll take everything we can get right now!” I told him. “Adam, you aim high with your heat ray! I’ll aim low with mine!” I shouted.
“Right!” Adam said.
“Jason, you pick off any we miss with your interceptor missiles!”
“Check!” Jason said.
Adam turned his arms into red-hot flames which flew out at the higher missiles. I focused my heat vision on the lower missiles. Adam’s heat ray caused ten of the missiles to burst into flames. My heat vision cut through another ten missiles turning them into dust.
Three missiles avoided our powers and streaked toward the ground.
Jason held out his arm. Flying through the air, he launched his interceptor missiles. Jason’s missiles zigged and zagged through the sky until they reached their intended targets. One of the missiles did a loop and headed towards the ground.
The others followed behind.
“What the?” I said.
Lori responded from the shuttle. “This is weird. Our eyes and brains see a group of crazed flying monkeys. Intelligent machines like Hana and MAC also see them. But dumb old-fashioned machines like radars don’t see
them!”
“Those things are illusions!” I shouted.
“That would appear to be the case,” both Dad and Lori said.
Jason pointed to his missiles, now heading towards the ground. “Those missiles I shot were real though! When they hit the ground, they will do massive damage!”
The missiles were mere feet from hitting the ground. “Adam and I are fast but no way can we catch those missiles now!” I yelled.
The missiles froze in place a split second before they hit the ground.
“Phew!” I gasped.
“Once the shuttle lands, Marie can use her powers to turn the missiles into something harmless,” Dad said.
“I’ll change them into nice flowers!” Marie said.
We all breathed a sigh of relief.
“We did it, team!” I said.
“Are you sure you’re going to be okay without us all being around for the summer?” Lori asked.
“Of course!” I said.
Dear Diary: The bad news…apparently, there is a new super criminal out there. One who can create very lifelike illusions. The good news is that my team and I were able to stop the monkey-missile illusions without doing any damage. Plus, now we will be on alert to the possibility of any future illusions.
Of course, during this summer break, my team will consist of fewer people because so many have cool summer plans. But Jason and I will just have to deal with it. I know we can. At least I hope we can. Yeah, we definitely can!
Man, I wish I could take a fun summer break, too. But, part of the deal with being Super Teen is that when you are a superhero protecting your town, you can’t take a lot of time off. The bad guys don’t take breaks. I can’t either. But still, that doesn’t mean I can’t have fun. Right? I gotta admit, squashing evil is fun.
A Little Self Belief
After the defeat of the illusionary flying monkeys, my friends and I gathered in the BMS Labs conference room to discuss the situation. Dad and Hana led the discussion.
